Description

In this 2 day (with overnight) class, we cover the basics of being an Outdoors Badass.

We start with an orientation and cover gear basics. This is an important step to ensure everyone has the required gear. You’ll learn how to do this as a participant and also as a Trip Leader. We do this, and you should too, before embarking on ANY trip out into the woods. An Outdoors Badass ensures that everyone in their group makes it back safely.

After orientation, we start our hike out to our destination. Along the way, we’ll talk about how to orient yourself and how to figure out where you are on the map. We’ll talk about reading terrain, picking out landmarks, and how to translate what all the things on the map are. You’ll learn how to navigate with a map and a compass. When the GPS fails, an Outdoors Badass doesn’t worry, they break out their paper map and compass because they are prepared and trained.

We’ll also talk about what animals you might encounter, how to stay safe, and what to do.

Next up we’ll talk through picking where to camp. Two potential campsites right next to each other can be vastly different when you know what to look for. Some sites are safe, others can be dangerous. You’ll learn what to look for. We’ll pick a safe site, and we’ll set up camp. We’ll talk about different types of tents, sleeping bags, pads, tarps, ground covers, bivvy’s, etc.

We’ll cook dinner while learning how to use backpacking stoves and cooking gear. We’ll unwind under the stars, and if permitted, we’ll have a campfire. We’ll cover fire-building basics even if we can’t actually light the fire. We follow fire restrictions to the T, so if fires are not permitted in the area at the time, there will be no fudging and there will be no fires.

In the morning, we’ll have breakfast and coffee and share our thoughts.

Next, we’ll go fishing and talk about how to catch lake trout and river trout. For the long term health of the area will release most of what we catch, but will have the option to keep one (per group) to learn how to clean and cook a wild fish. You’ll also learn the simple recipe that’s been passed down for generations in the Baron family.

We’ll play around where a river meets a lake, where the opportunities are plentiful. Practice your fishing skills, go for a swim, meditate, do some yoga on a granite slab, take beautiful photos, relax and unwind, and ask any questions that you may have.

Around lunchtime, we’ll start meandering back to the trailhead where we’ll call it day.
